What Does it Mean to Be Fit?
What do you think of when someone mentions that they need to increase their fitness level? Fitness means different things to different people. An average working man, for example, has a different criterion for fitness when compared to a professional basketball player who in turn also has a different criterion for fitness when compared to a professional golfer. What does being fit mean to you?
Fitness is defined as your body’s capability to do physical tasks. Since the physical tasks that people execute in their everyday lives vary from person to person, the standard for measuring fitness also varies. Generally speaking, fitness is gauged according to stamina, speed, strength and flexibility.
General fitness relates to your health and well-being, and an ability to perform everyday physical tasks. Specific fitness relates to your ability to perform a specific task, such as play a sport, lift a particular weight and so on. A person may still be deemed “fit”, as far as carrying out tasks in his daily life is concerned, even if he just sits in front of a desk all day long and doesn’t exercise nor participate in any sport or other physical activities. For a person who attends a gym regularly, takes part in sport, or works outdoors using physical strength and skill, a different standard of fitness is used.
A third definition of fitness is the ability to react to an emergency situation. This could mean a person’s ability to take flight from a dangerous situation for example. Being unfit would mean that you are unable to take action.
When it comes to general fitness, it is sad to note that many people today would qualify as unfit. It is these mundane tasks that we often need to perform, and cannot, that make people seek a better level of fitness.
In order to be healthy and fit, you must exercise. This doesn’t mean that you need to enroll immediately in a fitness program or go to the gym in order to workout every other day. Even mundane activities like walking may be an excellent form of exercise if you incorporate a few modifications. Walking up the stairs at work or at the mall is a start. Gardening, household chores and washing the car are all physical activities, helping to make you fitter. If you are already able to do these tasks without heavy breathing and tiredness, you are ready to move up a level. Some form of recreational sport can help you get fit quickly.
Professional athletes earn their income by being fit and healthy as well as being skilled in their particular sport. Their job is to train and exercise for that sport. As far as you are concerned however, your job is to lead a balanced and healthy lifestyle with the inclusion of enough exercise, so that you will be capable of handling the daily requirements of your life. Making sure you are physically fit can prevent injury and improve your overall health.
What does being fit mean to you? It means improving your present capabilities by eating healthy, exercising more and increasing your physical activity. You will feel better, be able to do more at home and at work, and get tired less quickly.
